The Kingdom Beyond Borders

Dear congregation,

In these turbulent times, amidst a global pandemic, political strife, and societal division, it's easy to feel overwhelmed and lost in the cacophony of voices vying for our attention. But fear not, for there is a beacon of light, a guiding force that transcends the temporal concerns of this world.

As we delve into the teachings of Jesus Christ, we uncover a profound truth: His objective was far greater than the narrow ambitions of his contemporaries. While many sought to preserve their nation and way of life, Jesus had a different agenda—a divine mission to establish a kingdom not bound by borders or earthly powers.

In John 11:48, we witness the clash between Jesus' vision and the provincial nationalism of his time. The influencers of the day debated strategies—retreating, confronting, accommodating, or practicing personal holiness—yet Jesus stood apart, focused on assembling a worldwide kingdom of the marginalized and humble.

His indifference to the existential threat of the Romans may seem perplexing, but it was rooted in a deeper understanding. Jesus' strategy wasn't to overthrow earthly authorities but to endure suffering, death, and resurrection, thereby forming a kingdom that would outlast empires and extend to the ends of the earth (Acts 1:8).

As we align ourselves with Jesus' objective, we find a renewed sense of purpose. Like him, we are called to a single-minded focus on the Father's work, a tender concern for the marginalized, and a habit of forgiveness and love. In seeking his kingdom and righteousness, we are freed from the pressure to take sides on every provincial issue of our culture.

Just as Jesus redirected attention to the Father's cosmic purposes, so too must we resist the temptation to be consumed by temporal concerns. Let us follow his example, embracing a kingdom mindset that transcends boundaries and embraces all who seek truth and love.

In closing, may we be inspired by Jesus' unwavering dedication to a kingdom beyond borders, and may we strive to emulate his life of purpose and love in all that we do.

Amen.
